In our 1st grade classroom, we have been busy learning and growing in many exciting ways! In reading, we recently finished a unit on weather, where we learned how different types of weather can affect how we feel. We are now beginning a new unit on agriculture. As part of our learning, we are growing our own soybean plant and conducting a fun experiment using food-colored water and a white flower to observe how the color travels through the plant. We are also learning about the important role of pollinators in helping plants grow.

In math, we have wrapped up our work with two-digit addition and subtraction. Next, we are beginning a unit on money, where students will start learning to identify coins and count using quarters.

In social studies, we finished learning about American history and especially enjoyed learning about the presidents. We are now moving into a unit on civics and government, where we will explore how our country is led and how we can be good citizens.

In science, we recently completed our study of the sun, moon, and stars, and learned how God created everything. We are now learning about the seasons and how the Earth spins and revolves. We also had a wonderful time on our field trip to the Science Center of Iowa, where students explored hands-on exhibits and connected their learning to the real world. We continue to look forward to all the exciting discoveries still ahead.
