Our first graders have been busy learning and growing in many exciting ways! In reading, we recently finished a unit focused on the special features God created in animals to help them survive. Students learned how God’s thoughtful design helps animals meet their needs. We have now begun a new unit exploring the wind, where students are using their senses to observe, describe, and understand the world God created around them.
In math, students learned about fractions and are now working hard on subtracting bigger numbers. They are practicing problem-solving skills and building confidence as they grow as mathematicians. In science, we have been learning about the human body. Students discussed how God created each part of our bodies with a purpose and why each part is important. We are now learning how to take care of our bodies and make healthy choices to honor God’s gift of life.
In social studies, our focus has been on American history. Students learned about timelines and how they show events from the past that lead up to today. They are especially excited to create their own personal timelines, highlighting important events in their lives and understanding how each moment helps shape who they are.
The last week of January was a joyful celebration of National Lutheran Schools Week. We kicked off the week on Monday with an all-school Goosechase, completing fun and silly tasks to earn points. On Tuesday, teachers swapped classrooms, and students enjoyed having a new teacher for 30 minutes. Wednesday was full of excitement with an all-school field trip to ice skate in Ames, followed by chapel and a fun game of BINGO. On Thursday, students rotated through activities including art projects, Bible stories, games, a service project, and learning about missionaries. We ended the day with a pep rally to cheer on our basketball players. We wrapped up the week on Friday with pajama day and an all-school movie. It was a wonderful week celebrating our Lutheran school, our faith, and the joy of learning together!
