January has flown by in second grade! We returned from Christmas break by reviewing skills we had already learned and quickly moved into new units and topics. It has been exciting to see students jump back into learning with focus, curiosity, and growing confidence.
In math, students have been learning about clocks and calendars while discussing how God created time as a gift to help us order our days. In phonics, we are working through Unit 7 and recently learned about the suffixes -y, -ly, and -ty. In science, we are wrapping up our unit on matter, exploring how different materials behave and change. In spelling, students have been practicing oi and oy word patterns. We also spent time setting goals for 2026, talking about how goal-setting helps us grow and trust God’s plan for our lives.
In social studies, we focused on the impact of Martin Luther King Jr. and how he listened to God and stood up for people made in God’s image who were not being treated with fairness and respect. These conversations encouraged students to think about kindness, courage, and how we can show Christ’s love to others in our words and actions.
In art, students learned about Claude Monet, the French artist and leader of the Impressionist movement. They worked carefully to create 3D water lily projects, paying attention to color, texture, and detail. The finished pieces were beautiful and proudly displayed.
This Super Bowl season inspired us to participate in the Malcolm Mitchell ReadBowl, where we compete with schools across the country to read the most minutes. To add to the excitement, we divided the class into teams and paired the challenge with an English assignment where students researched their team and completed an information sheet. Learning how to locate information in a text can be challenging, but students are doing a great job developing this important skill.
We also welcomed Rebecca the Respectful Rhino into our classroom! She visits the desks of students who are showing respect by listening carefully, staying on task, and honoring the person who is speaking. The students love her visits and enjoy being positive role models for one another.
