It has been a joyful and busy month in our third grade classroom! Here are some highlights of what the third graders have been learning and experiencing.
In religion, we have been learning about stewardship—the responsibility of taking care of the gifts God has given us and using those gifts to glorify Him and serve others. We also learned that God used angels as His messengers to proclaim the coming of the Savior of the world. Our lessons continue to point students to Jesus and His great love for us.
In English Language Arts, students have been learning about adjectives, articles, and adverbs to strengthen their writing and speaking skills. In phonics, we focused on soft g and c sounds, when to use them in words, as well as common roots and prefixes. In reading, we enjoyed stories and watched live broadcasts about the Apollo 11 journey to the moon and the first moonwalk, which sparked great curiosity and discussion.
In science, we began a new unit on cells, organs, and tissues. Students created edible cells and explored fingerprints, learning how each one is different and unique—just as God makes each person special. In social studies, we studied the regions of the United States, including different climates, types of communities, and the resources found across our country.
In math, students worked hard on multiplication and division, focusing on facts with 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s, along with related facts to build strong number sense and confidence.
Third graders participated in the all-school Christmas service, Good News, Great Joy, where they shared the message of Jesus Christ with family and friends. Sharing the message of Jesus took on special meaning as students also went Christmas caroling around the city of Boone on the last day before break. We celebrated some wonderful achievements as well, congratulating Amelia Callison, first-place winner in the VFW Auxiliary Third Grade Essay Contest, and Claireen Mann, the second-place winner.
As we close the first semester, I want to share how truly blessed I have been to teach this group of third graders. This semester has been a joy, and I thank God for each one of these amazing boys and girls.
