Fourth-grade students have been reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. The novel uses free-verse poetry to tell the harsh story of a young girl and her family during the Dust Bowl. History, geography, science, and conservation have been interwoven into our curriculum through independent reading and class discussion. Students have learned many facts about the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and the people who lived and died during that time period in the United States, while also reflecting on resilience, perseverance, and hope during difficult seasons. The unique poetry format has challenged students to think differently about storytelling and to pay close attention to word choice and emotion.

In science, we have been studying the Earth’s surface and how it is constantly changing through weathering and overuse. Students explored how erosion, wind, and water shape the land over time and discussed ways people can care for the environment responsibly. Art lessons have centered around the Water Cycle and the preservation of precious, natural resources entrusted to us by God. Math skills have continued to become more challenging as we move closer to the end of fourth grade. Division, word problems, graphs, and charts have been our focus this month as students strengthen their problem-solving skills and learn to explain their thinking clearly.

On February 13th we celebrated Valentine’s Day with a box contest, pizza party, and a movie. Students enjoyed sharing cards, playing games, enjoying sweets, and sharing God’s love with one another.
