Students have had a pleasant October in 5th Grade! How about that weather?! We have enjoyed the beautiful fall days as we continue learning and growing together.

In math, students have been working on multiplication and numbers of all sizes. They have also been reading and discussing their own independent books while enjoying The Call of the Wild as a class read-aloud, exploring story elements and conflict. In our Wit and Wisdom lessons (Module 1), students have continued studying Native Americans in literature, focusing on literary devices, plot, setting, conflict, and foreshadowing.

In English, students have been working on writing strong sentences using compound parts and nouns. Social studies has focused on Spanish, French, and Portuguese explorers in early American history. Students have also continued practicing common nouns and basic questions and answers in Spanish. They enjoy singing on Fridays, and a few have begun participating in band.

One highlight of October was the Big Island Rendezvous field trip in Albert Lea, Minnesota, with the sixth graders. Those who attended had a blast learning about American history and early colonial life while experiencing history beyond the classroom.

We have also begun developing keyboarding skills! I recently introduced fifth graders to Typing.com, a free typing program, and we will continue working on proper form and good typing habits in the coming months.

God continues to bless our classroom in many ways, and I am excited for the months ahead with this awesome class!
