We began April by learning about the true meaning of Easter. We talked about how Easter is a special time for celebrating the resurrection of Jesus and how His story teaches us about love, forgiveness, and hope. In first grade, we shared this message in ways that focused on kindness, new beginnings, and the joy of spring. The children also enjoyed fun Easter crafts, egg-themed math games, and story time that helped us celebrate this meaningful season together. It was a beautiful way to reflect on God’s love and the promise of new life.
In reading, we’ve been learning all about wind—how it moves, how it affects our world, and how people use it in creative ways. Through engaging stories and nonfiction texts, students are expanding their vocabulary and deepening their understanding of weather. We’ve even begun writing our own mini weather reports to practice using what we’ve learned in a fun, real-world way!
In math, our first graders are building strong number sense skills. We’ve been working on addition and subtraction strategies, learning how to solve word problems, and exploring place value to better understand tens and ones. Students are practicing how to explain their thinking and use tools like number lines and ten frames to solve problems. It’s wonderful to see them growing in both confidence and accuracy as they tackle new challenges.
We’ve also been out and about on some exciting field trips! Our visit to the Science Center of Iowa gave us a hands-on look at the world of science, sparking curiosity and lots of great questions. Then we headed to the Civic Center to watch 360 ALLSTARS—a high-energy performance full of music, movement, and jaw-dropping stunts. The students were amazed by the talent and creativity on stage! These adventures outside the classroom help bring learning to life and create memories we’ll treasure all year.
