1st Grade - September 2023

What a great start to the school year! We have had so much fun learning about all that God has done and continues to do for us!

We’ve started reading our Geode books. So far, we’ve read a folktale about Anansi playing a trick on his Nana, a nonfiction story about caves in France, and a fiction story about a boy who becomes the characters in the books he reads. We even learned a big word: onomatopoeia, which means a word that imitates a sound. We love reading in first grade!

In Math, we’ve begun adding and subtracting. We started with smaller numbers, but now we’re working within 20! We’ve learned different strategies like using a number line, drawing pictures, and using ten frames.

In Science, we’ve been learning about the plants and animals that God created. We discovered that plants need sun, water, and air to survive, while animals need water, food, shelter, and air. We even created a book about different animals, including where they live, what they eat, and what colors they can be!

In Social Studies, we are beginning to use maps. We’ve learned our directions and how to move on a map accordingly. We’ve also started learning about our community, state, country, and the continents. We discussed how different places have different rules, and our number one leader is God, whom we must follow.

In Art, we explored primary and secondary colors. We painted an ocean scene using primary colors and then read The Day the Crayons Quit. We used our primary colors to draw crayons and mixed them to create secondary colors!

We’ve had some exciting field trips as well! We visited the Insect Zoo at Iowa State University, where we learned about various bugs and even got to hold some. We also painted with maggots! After the Insect Zoo, we visited the Seed Center, where we learned about sorting seeds, different seed types, and how people test them. Lastly, we took a trip to the Ericson Public Library, where Mr. Z read us a story about how different animals camouflage in their environments.
