Our fourth graders have already done so much! It is amazing how much growth can happen in just a few weeks. We had our first field trip to the Iowa Arboretum. We got to be the only class there for the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of the new treehouse village. It was an honor and the students had a blast playing on the new structure. They did an amazing job listening to the various speakers.
We began our new literacy curriculum called Wit and Wisdom. It is a program ““crafted to help students build the knowledge and skills they need to be successful readers, exceptional writers, and effective communicators.” We have been learning about the literal and figurative meanings of the word “heart”. We will talk throughout the unit about what it really means to have a great heart.
In math, we are reviewing place value. This is important foundational knowledge that we have to have mastered so that we can do our other math successfully. We are also really drilling our math multiplication facts so that we can be efficient with our math skills.
Our theme for science this year is “we wonder and we wonder”. Meaning, we have questions about the world but we are also in awe and wonder of how God created it. We realized that our view of science enhances and becomes more meaningful when we give credit to God. We also defined what a scientist is and how if we are asking questions and seeking answers, we too are scientists.
This month we also went to Jester Park with 3rd grade for a program called “Life on the Prairie”. We got a glimpse of what life was like on the prairie back when tall grass prairie covered 85% of Iowa’s landscape.
