May was a joyful and busy month in first grade! It’s hard to believe the school year has come to a close, but we filled these final weeks with meaningful learning, special memories, and moments of celebration.
In reading, we stepped into the imaginative world of fairy tales. Students loved exploring classic stories filled with castles, dragons, talking animals, and important life lessons. Through these tales, we learned about character traits like honesty, kindness, bravery, and creativity. We also worked on identifying story elements such as setting, characters, and plot—all while enjoying the magic of storytelling.
Math lessons helped us build real-world skills as we practiced identifying coins, counting money, and learning to make change. We talked about how we can use these skills in everyday life—whether shopping at a store or saving up for something special!
One of the highlights of our month was our field trip to the Iowa Arboretum. Surrounded by God’s beautiful creation, we enjoyed nature walks, learned about plants and trees, and spent quality time together outdoors. It was a wonderful reminder of the beauty and creativity in God's world.
As we wrapped up the school year, we made time for some extra fun! We had a cozy movie day, enjoyed reading in tents, created colorful artwork, and spent time playing at the park. On our last full day, we held a talent show, and it was such a joy to watch our students shine as they shared their God-given gifts with their classmates—through music, jokes, gymnastics, drawing, and more.
I am so proud of how our first graders have developed not only academically, but also as kind, thoughtful, and faith-filled children of God. What a wonderful way to end our year—growing, learning, and celebrating all that God has done in our hearts and minds!
