1st Grade - November 2023

What a great month we had in first grade! At the beginning of November, we took a field trip to the Blank Park Zoo and learned about a tortoise and a hare. Then, we went to the Civic Center and watched a light show called The Adventures of Tortoise and Hare.

In Reading, we made paper slides about our geode books. Each table group got a different book, and then we drew pictures of the characters and setting in the story. After that, we retold the story using our pictures while Miss Hook recorded it. It was great working as a team! This month, we also read books about different libraries. Did you know there is a library on a ship in Norway? We read a lot of good books in first grade!

In Math, we have started adding and subtracting. We began with smaller numbers, but now we are adding and subtracting within 20! We’ve learned different strategies to help us find the answers, like using a number line, drawing pictures, and even using ten frames.

In Science, we finished learning about the plants and animals God created. Now, we’re exploring different objects and learning about solids, liquids, and gases. For a science experiment, we made bubbles using two types of soap—dish soap and hand soap. We had to decide which one makes better bubbles. (Hint: It’s the dish soap!)

For Social Studies, we’ve started learning about different jobs. We discussed the jobs we do at home, like picking up our toys, and the jobs we have at school, like putting our chairs up at the end of the day. Each job is different and important.

In Art, we’ve enjoyed creating various fall-themed projects. We learned about pumpkin parts and made our own pumpkins with construction paper. After that, we created a pumpkin patch. We also made colorful turkeys using stencils for the shapes and watercolor paints for the feathers. Our last art project was making a brown bear like the one in Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
