What an amazing start to the school year! The first graders are so amazing. We have started working hard in all our classes.
For reading, we have been reading about how books can change lives. We have read about a boy who travels to Iowa and the librarian encourages him to read books. Then we also read about a girl who lives in a village and a librarian comes into the village with donkeys who carry books because they don’t have a library. We were able to learn about moving libraries. We also read about a moving library that has camels carrying the books. How cool would that be! We have been able to learn about why reading is important and we have been able to read about different cultures.
For math, we have started learning how to add and subtract. We know that to add means we get more and to subtract means we take away. We were also able to play math games with our 8th grade friends who came to visit!
For science we are learning about plants. We have learned that plants need air, sunlight, and water. We also learned that plants have roots, a stem, leaves, and can produce a flower or fruits and vegetables. Right now we are growing a bean seed in a bag since plants don’t need soil to grow!
For social studies, we are learning about the rules we have at school and at home. We are also learning about routines and the things we do.
For writing, we have our own journal where we write in every week. We have been writing about some of our favorite things. We wrote about our favorite subjects, which were PE and science. Then we also wrote about our favorite lunch which almost everybody said was pizza.
