4th Grade - February 2024

Math - Students are reading story problems, determining the appropriate operation, estimating the answer, solving the problem to check if their estimation was reasonable, interpreting any remainders, and labeling their answers. They are continuing to memorize their basic math facts, wrapping up another math unit!

Science - Students learned about animal hearts for Valentine’s week. Did you know that octopi have three hearts? Or that sea stars don’t have a heart at all? Giraffes have very strong hearts to pump oxygen up their long necks, and the largest heart belongs to the blue whale, which has a heart the size of an automobile!

Art - Students made beautiful floral heart bouquets using simple materials like construction paper, scissors, and markers. These will be displayed outside the 4th-grade classroom until the end of February.

Valentine’s Day - Students learned about the history of Saint Valentine and why we celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Reading - Students have been working on various comprehension skills through fiction and nonfiction passages. We’ve also been spending time reading stories together at the teacher table, where they share their insights and thoughts about the passages. As a teacher, I love this time to hear what they’re thinking! They have great ideas and make amazing connections.

Language Arts - We continue expanding our understanding of language rules through textbook activities and applying them by writing narratives. We are also learning to write outlines using key words from a passage, which we then re-tell using those key words. Sometimes, choosing what’s most important isn’t as easy as it sounds, but we’re getting better at it.

Social Studies - We’ve started learning about the twelve states that make up the Southeast region of our country, along with the landforms, climate, and resources unique to that area. We are also taking a closer look at the Cherokee Nation—where they originated, their removal, and how they are prospering as a nation today.
