4th Grade - November 2023

Here’s what’s been happening in 4th grade:

Reading

In fourth grade reading, we finished our novels and have chosen new ones. We’re continuing to work on improving our fluency and confidence by reading silly poems and partner reading using both nonfiction and fiction passages. We’re excited to welcome a new volunteer, Deb, who joins us on Wednesdays to listen to and read with us.

Science

This month in science, we’ve been learning about herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. We’ve also been studying consumers, decomposers, and scavengers. On November 17, we presented reports or slideshows to our classmates about different ecosystems like the forest, tundra, desert, ocean, and prairie.

Math

In math, we’ve been learning multiplication using partial products and the distributive property. We’re also practicing our basic 1-12 multiplication facts.

Religion

In religion, we’re reading the New Testament. We recently had a discussion about Nicodemus and Jesus talking about baptism. Pastor Standfest had some fun by calling Lexi and Mykalah “good vipers” and Kaden and Fredrick (formerly known as Clark) “bad vipers.

4th Grade Field Trip

The 4th grade was supposed to go on a Doctor Kaboom field trip, but the doctor got sick, so we went to Jester Park instead. Here’s what we did: First, we went inside and saw a turtle with a flat back swimming around its tank. Then, we saw fish that seemed very interested in the 4th graders! After looking at the animals, we explored a wall display with different biomes and animals. We also went on a scavenger hunt to find different items related to biomes. Afterward, we went on a hike and saw elk and bison—big but cool! We ended the day with lunch and then returned to school. Jester Park is so fun! Go visit soon!

Art

One of our art projects involved using watercolors to create artwork in hot, cold, or warm colors. It was really fun, and we loved the beautiful colors we chose! We also completed a shading project where we used pencils to draw “1 cross + 3 nails = 4given."

Social Studies

This month, we talked about the California Gold Rush. It all started when a man found gold and told a storekeeper to keep it a secret—but the storekeeper shouted it out to the whole town! Soon, people from Hawaii and other places rushed to California. After that, we learned about cowboys, ghost towns, boomtowns, and Nat Love, a former slave who became a cowboy. We also studied latitude and longitude.
